It's All About Stamina

I'm exhausted. Things have been hectic and life has just caught up with me. My muse and my mind left me momentarily.

But I take heart. I am regaining my motivation. These shining examples of incredible stamina make me want to jump up and get moving....

CURARE-Z'S STAMINA AWARD WINNER RUNNER-UP

Fertility treatments (and stamina) helped this woman give birth to her 4th child, at 62 years old. The woman was 62 years old -- not the baby, people. This makes her the oldest British woman to have a baby. To put it into perspective: she will be 72 when her child is 10 years old (around 4th grade), she will be 80 when her child graduates from high school, and she will be lucky if she makes it to her child's wedding.....

There's a major debate going on over here at the moment about whether it is ethically right for a woman in her 60's to give birth to a child.

It's a tough call, but I just err on the side that this is wrong.

I mean, statistically this child is going to be left without a mother at a young age. Some would argue that a parent can die at any time, young or old and that it shouldn't make a difference as to what age you have children.

Secondly. and I think more importantly this poor kid is going to end up tending for an increasingly frail parent. Which child of any age should be expected to have that responsibility. I guess to ease the burden the parent could go into a nursing home, but who's going to pay for it ?

Just my view Curare, and your post is a good one.

Ben -- I'm interested to hear your view of it given that you're from England.

I feel the same way as you. Although I totally agree with a woman's right to choose, I can't help but feel sorry for the kid that is going to grow up with a potentially ailing parent like that.

From what I understand, she had the child because her younger husband "wanted children of his own." Not sure why he would marry a 62 year old woman then?!

It's a good thing that they found Sooty when they did. I don't think that even a guina pig could have handled day two.

Whew. No thanx. I balk at the idea of having a child after 35. By the time I'm in my 60's, I want to be retired, kicking back, with an iced tea....growing old gracefully...watching my kids/kid flourish...
ok, it's romantic...so sue me!!

Sooty is da man, er, I mean da guinea pig! Somewhere, Shawn Kemp is reading this(or having it read to him), and saying, "Now, that's what I'm talkin' about!"

I agree with Ben, whilst it is the womans right to choose 62 is too old to be having a baby, its very selfish on her part. 62 year olds can enjoy babies, just make it their grandchild !.

Also the Dr who gave the fertility treatment to a woman of that age should look at his own ethics.

Dear Curare - should I have children after 35?

Curare: No... Stop at 35!

Fuzz: Sooty probably aged 10 years from his one day in heaven.

Ally: Not romantic...realistic. :-)

Bruce: I think most everyone that read it thought "now that's what I'm talking about." :-) hee hee

Pixie: Great thought re: the Dr. I didn't even think about it that way, but she needed his help to even get pregnant didn't she?

LMB: Were you in my head? :-) And re: the loser on myspace....not worth the wasted air. Don't waste your time. He's just trying to get people riled up!

Mark: It's bad enough when you're young and can sort of keep up, isn't it?

Egan: Not wonderful...weird.

Dan: That was just for you.

Amulet: They have yet to post pics of the baby. If it has white and brown "fur," then I'll bet you're right!
