Drink Up!
While it shall never be said that I don't like to imbibe every once in awhile, I am concerned about my health. I'm well aware of the need to curb alcohol consumption. After all, my dad completely quit drinking the day his doctor told him to quit or have his liver buried with separate honors.
But there is hope on the horizon for the borderline drunk. Apparently, new studies have shown that coffee may reduce the risk of cirrhosis!
As if I needed any more reasons to go to Starbucks. Now my obsession with the franchise is totally legitimized.
Although the study author reports that "the way to avoid getting ill is not to drink a lot of coffee, but to cut down on the drinking," his warning rings hollow to me. Although he and his fellow researchers aren't quite sure WHY coffee helps, their study showed that one cup of coffee per day reduced the risk of cirrhosis by 20%, while four cups per day reduced the risk by 80%.
I'm pretty sure that the reason coffee helps your liver is due, in no small part, to the excessive purging of your system that occurs after drinking coffee. Who hasn't been told to "drink a cup of coffee" when the, umm...how do I say this....plumbing is all backed up?
So, I say, don't curb that hang over with a Bloody Mary in the morning. Have a cup of coffee -- or four. Your liver may thank you for it.
P.S. For you men that are concerned about your health, read up on the study that shows that a mere 17 beers per day may help you stave off prostate cancer.

12 Death Spasms:
There was a bartender in a bar that I frequented regularly long ago that would cut me off when my jokes starting getting old and would start serving me coffee. Either Irish Coffee or Coffee and Kahlua. I did not realize until now that she was just concerned for my liver.
But does it work in reverse? I don't have an alcohol problem (on average I only have about 1 drink every week or one every 2 weeks), although several of my friends would argue I do have a rather serious caffeine problem-- so will drinking more alcohol help ease the ill effects caffeine has on the human heart?
Should I start drinking more Gin & Tonics?
I have absolutely no objections with you visiting Starbucks and I mean that. You know where my wife works right? Caffeine in moderation is a good thing. I should get some now. Take care SG!
What if you drink Irish coffee--do they just cancel each other out somewhere on their way to your gullet?

I guess my 17 beer a day regimen was all for naught...
Fuzz: She was just looking out for you man!
Perplexio: My advice is ALWAYS to drink more.
Egan: Do they give your wife shares or what? Is "SG" going to be my name now?
Amulet: I would say that depends on how many you drink. 4 Irish Coffees would likely reduce your risk of cirrhosis by 50%, but increase your chances of a DUI by 80%.
Siren: I hear you. I think I'll switch to wine.
This study is going to bring out those crazyies that did the coffee enima.
Taking your advice to the next logical step--
With Gin & Tonics which do you feel is the proper Gin to use:
1) Bombay
2) Beefeater
3) Tanqueray
4) Gordon's
5) YES!
I'm a Bombay and Beefeater guy myself. Gordon's is okay for Tom Collins (where the taste of gin is drowned out by the sour mix), but other than that I've learned Gordon's products are generally to be avoided.
Dan: I'm not willing to cater to my liver that much.
Perplexio: OOHHHH. Good question. I'm a Bombay Sapphire girl, myself. So, that is generally what I would recommend to the discerning gin drinker. Beefeater and Tanqueray are both "ok" in my book, but Gordon's gives me one hell of a hang over, so I avoid it like the plague. I have NEVER heard of YES!, so it seems my liquor vocabulary must be updated!
Um, yes she gets shares. You too can buy shares if you're interested. It truly is a great company. Sure I'm a bit biased, but the stuff they do for their employees is pretty remarkable.
SG doesn't have to be your nickname. I can come up with something else if you want.
I think these are the same researchers that found men that view porn are more likely to succeed in the corporate world.
Egan: No, no shares for me. I actually have heard that Starbucks is a good company to work for, though.
Phoenix: Men that view porn are more likely to succeed in the corporate world? Sweet. I'll buy some for The Antidote and explain that I'm just doing it for his career. ;-)
